What Is Kinesiology? by ANDREW POWELL

Kinesiology is a holistic healing technique that uses feedback from the muscles to monitor the effects of stress on the nervous system. This feedback allows a practitioner to quickly uncover the real causes of physical, chemical and emotional symptoms.
Although the term kinesiology was originally used to describe the study of movement, it was first applied to healing by an American chiropractor named Dr. George Goodheart in 1964, who coined the term “Applied Kinesiology”.

Dr Goodheart noticed that there were sometimes dramatic strength changes in his patients’ muscles after he touched certain points or performed specific treatments. He began studying this phenomena, soon finding that not only physical corrections, but also holding acupuncture points and other reflexes could “switch on” muscles. He also found that each muscle was related to a specific organ. This meant a practitioner could uncover a lot about a person’s total state of health simply by testing their muscles.

This systematic study led to the discipline of Applied Kinesiology, which remains a chiropractic technique, although it is now practiced by other professionals such as psychologists and even some medical doctors. There are now many different forms of kinesiology, such as holistic kinesiology, sports kinesiology and behavioural kinesiology to name just a few. All are based on Goodheart’s original work and the use of muscle testing.

Kinesiology works because of the fact that everything in our bodies, including our muscles, is controlled by the nervous system. If we do something which creates a “stress” on the nervous system, it will show up as a muscle momentarily testing “weak”.
This stress could be physical, such as touching a bone that is misaligned, or a muscle that is in spasm. It could also be chemical, such as placing a toxic or allergenic substance on the body or in the mouth. The stress could even be emotional, such as thinking about a stressful thought or memory.

Whatever the stress is, it will result in a weak muscle test. By then determining what returns that muscle to strength, a practitioner can work out what the body needs to eliminate that stress.

In the case of a physical stress the body may need a chiropractic adjustment, or a specific muscle release. If the stress is chemical a nutritional supplement or some homeopathy may be required to return the body to balance. Emotional stresses can be released through the use of various mind/body techniques, such as NET (Neuro Emotional Technique).

Once the stress is removed the muscle will no longer test weak, indicating that an effective correction has been achieved.
This type of testing often reveals hidden underlying causes for health problems that would otherwise go undetected and untreated. Often this is the reason why people’s symptoms keep coming back, even after treatment. Kinesiology allows us to make sure that all factors have been addressed to permanently eliminate physical, chemical and emotional health challenges.
